This Friday we are hosting an opening reception for the second in our series of digital exhibitions, ENTERFACE features work from Justin Beachler including digital collages in a decorative environment alongside curated YouTube videos. The works will be presented in both the physical gallery space and online via Second Life. The Exhibition will open this Friday February 6th from 7-11 pm and will run through March 6th by appointment.
The works in ENTERFACE are a derivative of and response to Beachler’s view of the Internet as a forming super culture. The web is vast and sometimes unpredictable. As we are able to make, view, and participate within a digital world that is increasingly higher in visual definition and quality, there is a skepticism that fuels counter cultures. While excited about technological advancement – in the sense that it will eventually drive our existence into the ground (via a high definition blaze of glory) – Beachler is interested in the counter culture/subculture tools of cassette tapes, VHS, noise filters, and the reuse of anti-modern technology. These forms and their place as micro-cultural signifiers, symbols, and tropes Beachler takes and makes into cultural influence/commentary. Simply, Beachler is binging on the internet and regurgitating the bits of processed information into new works of art. While we are infinitely linked to everything that is uploaded onto the Internet, it is impossible to stay quarantined to one’s subset of interests. The path one takes while traversing the Daedelus link structures of the net become subjective when discussing one’s own will to click, as there is always click-bait/corporate algorithmic suggestions mapping our internet pathways. That said, the sheer bombardment of information and subsequent splinter pathways of net data will forever keep the interest variety in flux #noescape
Justin Beachler is an artist who lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri/online. He has exhibited at Bank Projects, Dolphin Gallery, Hown’s Den Domestic and Nomadic Space, Paragraph Gallery and was a 2013-2014 Charlotte Street Studio Resident. He is currently somewhere internetting on the web.
We are also excited to announce exhibition programming that will coincide with ENTERFACE.
